Amnesty International Addresses Gaza’s Flood Catastrophe
In its announcement, the global human rights organization emphasized that the shocking images seen recently — including waterlogged tents and crumbling structures across Gaza — "cannot be blamed solely on bad weather."
According to Erika Guevara Rosas, senior director for research, advocacy, policy, and campaigns at Amnesty International, "They are the foreseeable consequences of Israel’s ongoing genocide and deliberate policy of blocking the entry of shelter and repair materials for the displaced."
The statement highlighted that Israel has permitted only minimal humanitarian assistance to enter the besieged territory, viewing this as further proof that Israeli officials are persisting in efforts to “deliberately inflict on Palestinians in Gaza conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction – an act prohibited under the Genocide Convention, an act prohibited under the Genocide Convention.”
Rosas further stressed that "The devastation and deaths caused by the storm in Gaza provide yet another wakeup call to the international community, paid for with the lives of people who had managed to survive two years of Israel’s ongoing genocide."
She urged global actors to take immediate action to help Gaza brace for harsh winter weather by pressuring Israel to terminate the blockade and remove all barriers preventing the delivery of essential, life-saving aid, including emergency shelter supplies, adequate food, and critical medical assistance.
