Israeli Minister Smotrich Enters West Bank Town Amid Annexation Moves

(MENAFN) Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich entered the town of Ni’lin in the central occupied West Bank on Monday, following Tel Aviv’s announcement of new measures expanding control over the territory.

“Today, I carried out a tour (raid) of the waste-burning site in the town of Ni’lin, accompanied by the head of the Judea and Samaria Subcommittee (the biblical name for the West Bank), Knesset member Tzvi Sukkot,” Smotrich said on a social media platform.

Commenting on the annexation policy, he added: “During the tour, we closely monitored ongoing enforcement activities at the site, as part of broader efforts to restore control over the area and stop the continued impact on the quality of life of Israeli citizens.”

He highlighted that the visit followed the security cabinet’s recent decision, which he co-led with Defense Minister Israel Katz, granting Israeli security forces extensive powers to act against what they term environmental terrorism, even in Areas A and B.

Boasting about the operation, Smotrich said Israel “takes responsibility and acts wherever its citizens are harmed.”

Meanwhile, the Israeli army on Monday ordered several Palestinian families south of Jenin in the northern West Bank to evacuate their homes ahead of a planned return to a military camp abandoned in 2005.

Jamal Rashid, a Palestinian resident affected by the order, said that more than 50 people from multiple families were given until Tuesday morning to leave their homes and vacate the Arraba camp south of Jenin. He added that the families, who depend on livestock herding, had moved into old pre-1967 buildings inside the camp after the army’s 2005 evacuation, according to reports.
