UN Warns of Widespread Skin Infections in Gaza Amid Humanitarian Crisis
The UN agency responsible for Palestinian relief operations stated that the surge in infections reflects deteriorating sanitation and environmental conditions, with increased exposure to rats and parasites contributing to the spread of disease.
In a public statement shared on social media, the agency described the situation as a growing health emergency, noting rising infection rates and limited medical capacity. It said:
“Another crisis in the Gaza Strip. Rats and parasites are surging. Skin infections are spreading. Risk of disease is increasing,”
It further reported that medical teams are handling roughly 400 cases daily but stressed that treatment capacity could be significantly expanded if sufficient medical supplies were available.
The agency also stated:
“Over 125,000 cases of skin infections related to rats and parasites were reported between January and May 2026 in the Gaza Strip,”
and added that humanitarian access restrictions are limiting the delivery of essential medicines and supplies.
According to reports citing local health authorities, casualties have continued to occur since a ceasefire announced in October 2025, with hundreds reported killed and thousands injured during that period.
The broader humanitarian situation remains critical, with widespread displacement and severe shortages affecting an estimated population of around 2.4 million people in the territory.
